The coin's obverse features the national coat of arms surrounded by historical coats of arms used throughout Mexico's history. The reverse portrays the Winged Victory statue a symbol of triumph and freedom, and of Mexico's accession from Spain. In the background are two Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, central figures in a tragic love story where ill-fated lovers were turned into mountains by the Aztec gods.
